11 Bands, 11 Albums, 36 Songs. These tunes are for when you need to move some heavy iron around in your quest to be harder, better, faster, & stronger. At the end of the list you'll discover the most effective places for finding even more music to keep your workout fresh and exciting. Tweekend is my personal favorite album but aside from that there is no particular order for the songs or band placement on the list.

The Crystal Method

Best Album: Tweekend

Best Workout Songs: The Winner, Vapor Trail, Name Of The Game

The Best Place To Continue The Search – Soundtracks. The Big Wigs spend thousands of dollars trying to figure out the best music to get your blood pumping so you should steal their efforts and use those tunes in the gym. It’s like having your very own hundred thousand dollar workout. Here is one of my favorites from the last decade.

#7 - Song 2 By Blur

WOO-HOO. It's hard to top tempo changes of Song 2. With a cadence of 15 seconds off - 15 on - 15 off - 25 on - 15 off - 30 on, it is setup for some increasingly brutal intervals. Great for cardio intervals, timing a 90 rest period, & kicking your own butt cheeks in general.

#8 - Lateralus By Tool

When I'm in the weight room it is one of the few times I get that zen-like concentration of being in the zone and having only one task in mind. Pick-up the bar - Put it back down. Lateralus helps me get to that state of mind as soon as I walk into the gym. I press play as soon as I start my warm-up and then at seven minutes it finishes with two minutes of pure energy. Hard to find a better way to ignite.

#9 – Forest By System of A Down

Most of System’s songs are solid workout beats. Serj Tankian could sing the alphabet and it would be worthy to workout with. But until that track is released Forest is the top System of a Down song to lift with.

#10 – The Winner By The Crystal Method

I love working out with Crystal Method, especially their Tweekend Album. The Winner always invokes images of a crazy motorcycle duel on the freeway for me. Another video online synched it with atomic bomb testing in the 50s. Motorcycle duels, atomic bombs dropping, what image does it put in your head? Either way you’re in store for some powerful training.

What tunes round out your top ten songs for working out strong?

Make sure not to miss out on the Original Six -> The Top Three Workout Songs & Numbers Four, Five, & Six.

#5 - Name Of The Game By The Crystal Method

The Crystal Method's Tweekend album is excellent for all sorts of exertion. The entire track list strikes a perfect balance between vocals, instrumentals, and song length. This is the tune that wins as its best workout beat by a nose - as you will see in the video. It has been in several climatic scenes in action movies and will be just as exciting in your workout.

Pardon the peculiar title – but that’s only if you missed the list of the best three workout songs of all time. These are the beats that cause me to immediately push the back button on my iPod shuffle. They’ve been battled tested for over a year in my most intense workouts and never fail to get those extra reps and poundage in.

#4 – Through the Fire and the Flames By Dragonforce

At seven minutes and twenty-four seconds of shredding it is great for when you need to be going full throttle for an extended period of time. After my weight training, I like to do five circuits of walking for 30 seconds, sprinting for 30 seconds, and push-ups for 30 seconds. This song is a perfect match and I am sure it works well with several crossfit type workouts. The video is abridged but still does the rhythm justice.

#5 – Name Of The Game By The Crystal Method

The Crystal Method’s Tweekend album is excellent for all sorts of exertion. The entire track list strikes a perfect balance between vocals, instrumentals, and song length. This is the tune that wins as its best workout beat by a nose – as you will see in the video. It has been in several climatic scenes in action movies and will be just as exciting in your workout.

#6 – Vermillion By Slipknot

This song is reserved for only the most intense sets of my workout. It doesn’t mesh well with cardio machines but whenever you plan on throwing around the heavy stuff it works wonders. It even has a good timing set for strength workouts since it kicks into overdrive at the two minute mark and then once again around three. This video and band are also quite eccentric but perhaps that is a strong sign of a great group for workout beats.

#1 - Giving In By Adema

This video is perfect. I know I would not want to look like former Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman but I can definitely feed off his dedication, intensity, and relentlessness in the weight room. Giving In is the all around perfect workout song. I have done entire workouts with this guy by just hitting the back button on my shuffle eleven times. Best Used For Any Type of Intense Lifting.

Update: Those Corporate Fat Cats made Youtube take down the Ron Coleman Video. Here is the music video instead - Still Excellent.

These three tunes are the best when it comes to workout beats. A huge part of going to the gym for me is the fact I can completely zone out to the point where my only purpose is to move the weight around for the next set. The cardio equipment could be set ablaze and I’d still have the focus and concentration to finish the reps of my set before sprinting the heck outta there. This type of mental focus trains your brain and releases any tension you had before. When you need that focused intensity in the gym these musical gems are ready to help you explode. They are gym tested and have never failed to get me fired up.

Update: Those Corporate Fat Cats made Youtube take down the Ron Coleman Video. Here is the music video instead – Still Excellent.

#2 – Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails.

I found this song in the trailer for 300 and was wondering where it had been all my life. It starts at the 51 second mark. On the actual track when it hits 2:26 it is 45 seconds of incredible intensity. You completely lose yourself in the music. Your brain flips to a much more instinctual and animalistic setting. Best used for Rowing Invervals like a Madman or Intense Deadlifting.

#3 – Love Dump by Static – X

I don’t listen to this song too often in the gym. When I do use it for heavy squats they always end up being the most intense sets I’ve ever done. This video doesn’t do it as much justice as when it’s pumping through your ears. Put it on your iPod for your next leg training day. Best Used for Breathing Squats. Very NSFW…

What’s a breathing squat? You take a weight that you are only able to squat ten times but you eventually end up squatting it twenty times. The trick is you can take a few breathes between reps while you’re standing with the weight on your back for the 11-20 repetitions. Once you finish ten reps take two or three breathes, squat for number 11, take two or three breathes, squat for number 12, and continue all the way to twenty. You can take as many or as few breathes as you need. Sometimes I find I need four or five breathes while other times I get euphoric and pump out the last two or three reps in a row. If I’m feeling really sadistic I’ll even go up to 21. The most intense lift you can do in the gym. It nukes just about everything. Several people swear by it for putting mass on your physique. More intensity techniques coming this week.

Exercising with good music is definitely part of an Intelligent Workout. I know I am able to pump out a few extra reps on each exercise and eliminate the monotony of cardio with my iPod Shuffle. The February 2009 issue of Men’s Journal said researchers from the University of Maryland believe listening to music releases endorphins from the pituitary gland into your bloodstream. This in turn releases nitric oxide which relaxes blood vessels making it easier for blood to flow through your veins. I know its a bit challenging at times to keep a fresh, motivating playlist. Here are twenty workout beats that you have never heard before. I arranged them starting with songs best suited for cardiovascular activity leading all the way down to a good ole’ fashioned heavy resistance workout at the end. Enjoy your workout.
